I had the pleasure of attending a speech by Alan Gura who argued on behalf of Heller in the Heller V. District of Columbia Supreme Court case. As you may recall Heller was victorious in this case resulting in the DC Handgun Ban being overturned. This is probably the most important 2nd Amendment case ever.

Mr. Gura’s speech focused on what is next in regards to the courts and the 2nd Amendment. He said he is currently litigating a lot of 2nd Amendment cases. The area he focused on is the right to carry a firearm outside the home. Heller only dealt with the possession of a functional firearm in the home. But the 2nd Amendment confers a right to “keep and bear arms” and bear today means (as it in 1787) to carry. So Gura is confident that eventually the Supreme Court will rule that the 2nd Amendment guarantees a right not only to own a firearm for defense in the home but to carry one outside the home for defense.

A personal interest I have is in firearms regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA) which includes suppressors, machine guns, and short barreled rifles and shotguns. I inquired to Gura about the NFA and he stated that he didn’t believe it would ever be overturned. Moreover he stated that he didn’t think machine guns are covered under the 2nd Amendment because the Heller decision guarantees the use of arms that are of “common use” and machine guns are not of “common use”. Now is the $200 transfer tax the NFA imposed part of the reason they are not of “common use”, probably, but its still reality. Gura said if he had tried to include machine guns in the Heller case he would have no doubt lost. See his thoughts here http://gunnuts.net/2008/03/20/alan-gura-on machine-guns/ He did say that he thinks it would be possible to make suppressors non NFA weapons but that it would be awhile before the Supreme Court would entertain such a change.

I thanked Mr. Gura for the critical work he has done for 2nd Amendment rights and enjoyed hearing him speak.

I am lucky to live a little more than 2 hours from the NRA Whittington Center. Mike Kolar and some other local long range shooting enthusiasts started a match there several years ago called the Sporting Rifle Match. The match is a precision rifle match set in the natural terrain of the Whittington Center. Match has 10 stations with 6 steel targets on each station. Targets range from 200-875 yards and are generally larger than 1 MOA. Shooter has 4 minutes to engage all 6 targets at each station. Matches are held monthly February through September (except June). See http://sportingriflematch.com/ for more info.

The match really tests your ability to use your equipment effectively and adjust to changing winds. While I always enjoy shooting this match I never perform as well as I hope. This time I hit 33 of 60 targets. (Edit, I hit 50 at the March match.)

As you can see in the video the targets are set in the natural terrain and thus can be hard to locate. I have found a Scope Lever on my scope really helps me locate and then zoom in on my targets.
So with a low power and wide field of view you can locate a target and then zoom in on the target to engage it without ever losing sight of the target. The following video shows what this looks like.

One of my favorite local matches is our Sniper/Prairie Dog match. The match consists of 10 targets which are steel lifesize prairie dogs (about 12in tall by 4in wide). They are placed at varying distances from 220-425 yards. The shooter has 15 seconds to close his bolt and hit the target, one shot only. If you hit it in the first 10 seconds you get 10 points, 5 points up to 15 seconds. Guy with the most points win. Lots of fun. So I did a couple short video on shooting these types of targets. Enjoy.

We would like to congratulate our friends MSgt. Hoser Freeman and retired LEO Mike Dowd who won the the match using our Scope Levers.

“This match is an extreme test of practical field rifle shooting and its supporting activities. Two-man teams will be required to navigate rugged desert terrain, recognize, locate, range, and engage challenging rifle targets from compromised shooting positions, communicate with their partner and the range officer (RO), and do it under time constraints. This will be a physically-demanding match! ”

The match winners.

I’m lucky to shoot a monthly Tactical Rifle match every month most of the year. Match Director Hoser Freeman puts on a great match, 3 stages, one a standards type stage, a second on a regular 425 yard berm using flash targets, LaRue targets and occasionally a Texas Star, and finally a stage on natural terrain with shots out to 400 yards. The stages always test a rifleman’s (or woman’s) ability to engage targets at various distances utilizing a variety of positions and support props.

Here is a video from this month’s match of Hoser shooting his Larue OBR Lite with Lilja barrel, Surefire brake, Leupold CQBSS Scope (with one of our Scope Levers) and a Surefire 60rd mag. Enjoy.
